Our Havenmaking Journey

Watering Our Grass

Watering Our Grass

I’ve been sitting with this quote from John Piper and I wanted to share it with you. “Nothing has shown my sin like marriage, and nothing has given opportunities for grace like marriage." There really is nothing more vulnerable than your spouse seeing first hand the messiest and nasty parts of your heart, yet the beautiful design of God to allow that to take place in order to sanctify us both to be more like Him astounds me.
.
This quote is also an encouragement to me “The grass is greener where you water it.” The temptation to look around and think the grass is greener on the other side is a lie. We loose sight of how God is using our marriage for our sanctification when our eyes our fixed on someone else.
.
When we begin to find ways to be grateful in our spouse and we gain a fresh perspective, that's when we start to water our grass.
.
When we practice asking for forgiveness and walking in repentance, that's when we start to water our grass.
.
When we pray before listing out all the flaws + offenses that builds walls, that’s when we start to water our grass.
.
When our tone of voice and body language change to graciousness + gentleness, that’s when we start to water our grass.
.
When we ask for grace + wisdom to reach the heart of our spouse, that’s when we water our grass.
.
When our lips are used for uplifting words and kissing, that's when we start to water our grass.
.
And when we start to admit our sin + pride, that's when we start to water our grass.

The temptation to think people don’t have to work for love is also a lie. It's easy for me to presume that "their" marriage is easy and effortless. Its in the work and the daily discipline to practice watering that is essential to forming that depth of love. While I’m certainly far from perfect in this, I know becoming more like Christ is beautifully worked out in my marriage. When I stop resisting that plan, I begin to see the glorious fruit of oneness.

Marriage is sanctifying and there is no perfect formula other than allowing the truth of Gods Word to claim the center of how you love and live the marriage out. I also understand there are many circumstances that make this difficult to read, please trust me I probably have experienced it. But I believe that if all you can do today is pray quietly to the Lord in regards to the pain you are feeling over the brokenness- that my friend is watering your grass and God will honor that step of obedience. One day I will share my story of redeeming love, because its my favorite thing to share and a picture of beauty out of ashes that resonates deeply with my heart. But today I'm grateful for the grace given to me by a Gracious God to use my marriage for His glory and my good!!
